Scotch is a leader in environmentally conscious cleaning

Scotch offers perchloroethylene-free cleaning. Although perchloroethylene (perc) has been the standard dry cleaning solvent in the U.S. for over fifty years, recent media reports have begun to question its environmental impact. Scotch has switched to the most modern and environmentally conscious dry cleaning equipment made in the world (Italy), which recycles the cleaning solvent continuously through filtration and distillation, and we now use a cleaning agent called DF2000. The DF2000 solution is a synthetic hydrocarbon with a very low VOC rating, which means it does not easily evaporate into the atmosphere and has a nearly 100% recycle rate. We are proud of our environmental record and work hard to keep you and our planet safe.

Does Scotch charge differently for men’s and women’s garments?

Scotch does not “gender price.” It’s hard to believe that some cleaners in Topeka and Lawrence still charge more to clean a woman’s garment than a man’s. Scotch is proud of our long-standing gender neutral pricing. When it comes to a cotton shirt, a pair of pants, or any other item, you’ll find that Scotch charges the same price whether it is a woman’s or a man’s garment.

What’s the best way to care for my sweaters?

Sweaters can be demanding. They stretch, they shrink, and they produce funny little balls of yarn that won’t brush off. Sweater fabrics and cleaning needs differ. Taking them to the cleaners can help keep them looking good from season to season.

Here are a few tips to help care for your sweaters at home. Store sweaters folded. Sweaters on hangers will tend to stretch. In order to allow natural fibers to breathe, do not store sweaters in plastic bags. Have your sweaters professionally cleaned before storing. Unseen spots may turn color while in storage and leave permanent stains. Cedar blocks, not mothballs, are recommended for protection against insect damage. Avoid wearing jewelry that can snag and pull threads loose. Remove jewelry before removing your sweater. Wearing the same sweater too often will often cause it to lose its shape.

Does frequent dry cleaning shorten the life of a garment?

On the contrary, frequent cleaning prolongs the life of a garment. Not only do stains set with age, making the garment unwearable, but also ground-in dirt and soil act as an abrasive, like sandpaper, causing rapid wear of fibers. Also, insects are attracted to soiled clothes and will cause further damage.
